AHRO MICROBICIDE RESEARCH PROGRAM (AMRP)
Introduction

Microbicides are compounds that can be applied inside the vagina or rectum to protect against STIs including HIV.

The microbicides being developed will be developed as a female-initiated method for reduction of male to female transmission of STI including HIV. If found effective, most microbicides will be formulated as vaginal gel, cream, foam or ring.

The mission of AMRP is to promote the reduction of sexually transmitted diseases/infections by the development and evaluation of microbicides.

Purpose
The AMRP advances:
  1. Development of how microbicide approaches and targets through basic and preclinical researches.
  2. Discovery and exploration of microbicides directed HIV of STIs linked to HIV acquisition.
  3. Exploration of complex prevention strategies that incorporate vaginal, rectal, and/or penile applied microbicides.
  4. Emerging technologies for models that contribute to the development of new and/or more efficient ways of assessing microbicide safety, efficacy and acceptability.
Activities
  1. Treatment, research and development efforts will comprise:
  2. Undertaking clinical trials in population in Africa to determine if a microbicide candidate qualifies for further efficacy evaluation.
  3. Designing and conducting programs in microbicide trials that provide a rigour testing of scientific concepts for the development of microbicides.
  4. Creating network with other scientists for better collaborative activities.
  5. Promoting ethical consideration in microbicide R & D.
  6. Undertakes acceptable surveys in communities.
